COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF VACCINES AND HOW TO MANAGE THEM.
Category:Science and Innovation
There are those days you could get afraid to spend sleepless night and sometimes you run out of solutions. Mothers’ tension usually elevate especially on the immunization visits for their babies to receive the appropriate vaccines. They get puzzled on how their babies would feel unsettled or sleepy after the vaccination.
Vaccines have been extensively tested by scientists and doctors and are extremely safe. Every day, all over the world, babies safely receive multiple immunizations. Although Immunization keeps us safe from many infectious diseases, just like any medication, we may experience side effects after our vaccinations. Side effects after immunization are mostly mild and usually last one to 2 days. The most common side effects include;
- fever (a temperature over 38.5 °C)
- Pain the moment the needle goes in and after receiving a vaccination, or maybe redness or swelling where the shot was given.
- Chills
- Fatigue
- Headache
These side effects go away by themselves with time. But all the discomfort can be managed in the following ways:
- Paracetamol should only be given in the case of a high fever following immunization and only the minimum dose appropriate for your child’s size should be given.
- Put an ice pack or cold wet cloth on the injection site to ease discomfort.
- Drink extra fluids.
- Do not overdress children or babies if they are hot.
- Get enough rest, if possible
Above all, the benefit to risk ratio is nearly unmatched and it’s better to keep our bodies vaccinated.
