As we age our bodies undergo various changes that impact our nutritional needs and overall health. Proper nutrition becomes increasingly essential. Understanding and addressing specific nutritional needs for older adults is essential for their well being.

  1. Dehydration is common among older adults and causes health issues including urinary tract infections, confusion and constipation. As you age, your sense of thirst diminishes, making it essential to hydrate often. Water is the best form of hydration. Soups, herbal teas, fruits also offer sufficient content of water.
  2. Bone health. Aging increases the risk of bone fractures making bone health a priority. Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is essential. Dairy products, leafy greens and fish are a good source of vitamin D and calcium.
  3. Fiber rich foods. As you age and have reduced or limited physical activity, changes in digestion, constipation becomes more prevalent. Introducing fiber rich foods into your diet can help improve and promote your health. Foods like whole grain, nuts, legumes and vegetables aid this.
  4. Calorie requirements. Metabolism slows down as we age and our calorie intake decreases as well. Calorie requirements depend on your muscle mass, diet, and overall health status. As an older adult you should aim to take nutrient rich, mineral rich and antioxidant foods that have little calorie intake.
  5. Protein Intake. Protein is essential for strength, muscle mass and optimum bodily function. As you age, the above mentioned declines. To ensure controlled and measured aging, you need sufficient quantities of lean meats, dairy products, eggs, fish, nuts and legumes.
